Welcome to Bluebells

After lockdown, we are extremely proud that all of our children have settled extremely well. In Early Years, children’s learning is based on a number of exciting topics, as well as through the children’s current interests and curiosities.

Here is our Autumn newsletter.

Our Classroom

Blackhall Primary School provides a safe and nurturing environment where children develop on an individual basis guided by their natural curiosity and guidance of our experienced early year’s practitioners. We see the early years as a preparation for life and a foundation for everything which follows.

Musical Success for Blackhall Bluebells

Our nursery continues to work closely with leading specialists from Durham Music Service.

Over the last few weeks, we have explored the story ‘Greta and the Giants.’ The book tells the story of Noble Peace Prize nominee Greta Thunburg, inspiring children to believe that ‘no-one is too small to make a difference.’ The story was promoted as part of Durham’s book festival ‘The little read.’ Durham Music Service were extremely keen to share our musical ‘provocations’ (ideas to provoke a musical response) on their Facebook Live.

We are extremely proud of how much our children have progressed over the last two years and thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our children’s achievements. (Especially as we were the only nursery in the whole of the county to be chosen to share our work!!!😁). Here is the link to County Durham Early Years Facebook Live  https://fb.watch/4rej3VzbFT/   which was then liked and shared by Durham County Councils early years educators Helen Nixon and Sue Rounce: https://fb.watch/4rej3VzbFT/
You can watch our powerpoint slides which explain what we did, how we did it and the impact on our children’s learning and progress. We hope you enjoy them and learn more about the ways we engage our youngest children and help them to develop.

Let’s Be Superheroes!

We have begun our new term exploring Superheroes and real life heroes through the topic ‘People who help us.’ Children have particularly enjoyed pretending to have super powers. They have developed their nurturing skills and abilities through role playing doctors, nurses, firefighters and police.

I Can Cook

Throughout the year children are provided with opportunities to cook. This term the children thoroughly enjoyed blackberry picking and making blackberry crumble. Delicious!

Our Mini Zoo!

In our Bluebells classroom we pride ourselves on giving children real life experiences. At present we have a pet rabbit named ‘Gizmo,’ two giant African snails ‘Shelly and Sheila’ and a huge tank full of colourful goldfish. The child enjoy helping looking after our pets. Watch out for more pets in nursery…

Learning Through Play

Our nursery classroom offers enriching activities to enhance children’s learning and curiosity. In our Early Years setting, children have the opportunity to explore indoors and outdoors, making links between the two learning environments.

Our Outdoor Learning Environment

Forest School and Beach School

“The best classroom and the widest cupboard is roofed only by the sky.”
Margaret McMillan

At Blackhall Bluebells much of our learning is based outside where contact with nature enhances creativity, well-being, attention and self- discipline skills. It also fosters an interest and enjoyment of learning.

“Mrs Sergeant I loved going out today.” – Nursery Child Aged 3 Years

We are currently in our sixth year of carrying out forest schools and have successfully achieved the Woodland’s Trust ‘Green Tree School Gold Award’ for our dedication to the outdoor curriculum. (See top of page for a picture of our award).

Last year we extended our outdoor activities and now offer a beach school programme throughout the year. During our ‘Outdoor Adventures’ the children have visited the local woodland and beach. They confidently explored den building, nature sculptures, tree climbing and FIRE!

Home School Links – Parents as Partners

At Blackhall Primary School we value the contributions parents/ carers make to their children’s education. In our nursery we have established excellent home school links and are proud of the fact that parents happily share learning experiences through Tapestry. By working together we can ensure each child achieves the best possible outcomes. We also offer workshops to enhance parental learning. Information to follow…

Tooth Brushing

We are committed to improving the oral health of our children through the Early Years Tooth Brushing Programme. Blackhall Bluebells have regular visits from our local dentist nurse to encourage regular tooth brushing.
