It is our vision that RE encourages pupils to develop positive attitudes to their own and others’ beliefs, ideas, experiences, feelings and values, in a classroom and school environment that recognises and respects difference.
Curriculum Rationale
Pupils will study Christianity at each of the key stages. At least one of the other
five principal religions will also be taught at one of these key stages. This is a requirement of this Agreed Syllabus and ensures that each of the principal religions are studied in a systematic way at least once during a child’s education. The required ‘core’ religions to be studied at each key stage are:
- Key Stage 1: Christianity, Buddhism
- Key Stage 2: Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, (plus a small special study of Islam)
At Early Years Foundation Stage, we draw on Christianity plus aspects of the other principal religions as appropriate through the areas of Knowledge and Understanding of the World and Personal and Social and Emotional Development.
The RE curriculum is coherent and progressive, enabling pupils to deepen their knowledge and understanding of religious and non-religious worldviews and their understanding of the complex, diverse and plural nature of belief systems. Enquiry questions are at the heart of RE at all key stages from Early Years Foundation Stage to KS2. They enable pupils to build on previous learning and deepen and broaden their understanding through increasingly sophisticated and complex systematic and thematic enquiries. They are used for units of work at all key stages.
Religious Education in the EYFS
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum supports children’s understanding of Religious Education through the planning and teaching of ‘Understanding the World’. Children are encouraged to use their imagination and curiosity to develop their appreciation of, and wonder at, the world in which they live. Exploring others views, cultures and beliefs supports children in developing their views and beliefs about themselves, their family and community. In finding out about others, young children are encouraged to reflect on belief, culture and practice and explore faith through observing festivals and celebrations, sharing stories, visuals, toys and puppets, handling real artefacts, roleplay, books and discussion.

Religious Education in KS1 & KS2
Our RE curriculum is designed:
- to enable our children to become respectful and successful adults in terms of being able to find employment in the future and to be moral citizens
- to provide a relevant, progressive and well-structured RE curriculum which enables children to develop and master a broad knowledge and wide range of skills
Our RE curriculum is structured providing for each key stage and year group:
- A clear list of end points
- Progressive knowledge and skills which will shape children as moral citizens
- A clear list of vocabulary both appropriate to RE and progressive through the key stages
- Provide a variety of enrichment opportunities including visitors into school, local area visits and visits to different places
